Homeschooling from the inside out

About Melisa & Erik

Who is Melisa?
I am a near 40 mom with five beautiful (but busy!) children ranging in age from infant to 15 years old.  My Waldorf background comes from years of studying and living Steiner’s principles.  I have studied Steiner since my oldest was very young, about 12 years.  When I started homeschooling, I had no choice but to write my own curriculum and that took a lot of research. There was very little help for homeschoolers at that time. Through the years, I kept excellent notes and about five years ago I began writing what is now our “Journey through Waldorf Homeschooling” series.  As of Spring 2012, I have taught kindergarten 4 times, 1-5th grade 3 times, 6-7th grade twice and 8-9th grade once.

My life experience is what makes me a good writer and Waldorf consultant. I have a knowledge of working with special needs (my oldest is ASD) – I know how hard those younger years can be and just how often you consider giving up.  I also have been a single mom.  My older three children are from my first marriage, so I know how it is to homeschool and be single. I know how nice it is when everyone can get along and the perils of court battles.  My journey has taken me to many places.

While I am not a trained Waldorf teacher, I don’t pretend to be one – I am a mom – well versed on Steiner and well versed on life.  I know what it is like to pray for rain and then stand in the mud – I know how to homeschool one child and many children – all at once! AND what I really know is that you don’t need dogma, you need a friend for the journey, someone you can trust and talk plainly to, someone you can turn to when you need extra prayers or just a little umph, and someone who knows her way around Steiner.

I get a lot of questions about my walk of faith, you can read about that HERE.

I occasionally get a chance to blog privately about life with 5 kids, food we like to eat and all the handwork I long to have more time for. You can read my blog here, Gnomes & Knitting Needles

Who is Erik?
Erik is my eternal companion, my dearest friend… and probably the most patient man on the planet.  When Cat Stevens sang about a “Hard Headed Woman” – well Erik can relate but then he rejoices in it as well!    He and I run this family and our business together full time.  His background is  journalism and film. He is also our film maker, book/film/audio editor and so much more. Besides us, things that bring him joy are also the things that keep him young and accessible for our children – he collects He-Man toys, enjoys comics and has a crazy encyclopedic knowledge of Star Wars.

Together, we love what we do. We really are as nice as we seem!
