Homeschooling from the inside out

Gardening for those that don’t garden

I embrace all of Waldorf and I am freely willing to admit that I am better at some things than I am at others.  Gardening is one of those things that I have a love-hate relationship with.  Okay, hate is a pretty strong word. I don’t hate it, I just have a thumb that isn’t super green.  I strive every year to do better.  This year is going to be awesome right?  Well I hope so.

We have a half acre, but I didn’t want to overwhelm myself with a giant garden the first year in this space so we went with something I knew I could handle, 20×10, plus a 5×5 plot in the front for pumpkins and a raised bed for strawberries. Super Simple.  I wanted Super Sam to have a garden spot too and once I started planning that, they all wanted their own plots.

We came across this great book – perfect since Ellie is starting botany this month and the story line and pictures are delightful even for Super Sam (we just skipped some of the long explanations for him.)

If gardening isn’t your thing, don’t stress!  It is part of the curriculum, but you don’t have to be perfect at it. Be happy to take the journey.  Plant things you will enjoy eating.  Get your fingers dirty. And if you mess up, laugh and head to the farmer’s market.

Blessings.
